Lucy from birth has always been a hungry baby. I was a new nursing mom who had no idea what to expect. When my two week old baby wanted to nurse every hour (mind you, it was taking her sometimes up to 45 minutes for a feeding session) I thought to myself “Am I ever going to be able to do anything else besides feed her?”. The pediatrician said it was absolutely normal and that as she grows up the time in between feedings will go longer.
Here I am with my 6 month old daughter who nurses every two hours on the dot. Yes, it’s better than every hour, but two hours is still not a long time to go in between feedings! So that feeling of “Am I ever going to do anything else besides feed her?” The answer is barely. My life is consumed by nursing her.
Sometimes it gets very overwhelming. Sometimes I feel alone. Sometimes I get frustrated. Sometimes I want to give up if we are being honest here.
But the truth of it all, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love the fact that I am needed by my daughter. The way she looks at me and NEEDS her mama. The bond my daughter and I share is unlike any other relationship she has. Not only am I her source of nourishment, I’m her best friend. She looks up at me with such genuine happiness. I am her everything. She needs me just as much as I need her.
So even when you’re feeling completely overwhelmed from the constant demand to stop everything to feed your baby. When you’re feeling completely exhausted from waking up multiple times at night to nurse your baby back to sleep. When you’re feeling alone when you have to go into another room to feed them. Just remember that look, that smile, that touch when you’re nursing them. How happy they are that their with their mama. I promise you, it will trump EVERY negative aspect of nursing you can come up with.
If you are struggling with breastfeeding your baby and feeling overwhelmed, just remember there is a light at the end of the tunnel! You will not be doing this forever! Be proud of yourself for the amazing thing you are giving your child, the best gift they can have is mommy’s milk! Be empowered knowing that you have dedication that you might not even known you had inside of you! I sure know I didn’t think I had it inside of me. For however long you decide to nurse your baby whether that be a couple weeks, months or years, GOOD JOB MAMA! You are a rock-star, a super woman and the best mom to your baby! God Bless!
